Sita Scherer’s think piece, filmed on 16mm, is focused on the land of the former Kassel Waldau Airfield, which was used as a factory airport by the Gerhard Fieseler company under the Third Reich. The “National Socialist model company” produced a range of military aircraft and developed the V1. Thousands of forced laborers from the Netherlands and France were put to work there. Today, the old roads and runways are all overgrown with apples, blackberries, rosehip, and mushrooms. Essen vom Boden der Geschichte (Food from the Soil of History) is based on the idea that all soils have their own history which, however destructive, can be engaged with through the fruits borne by that soil.
