In Michael Wadleigh’s 1981 horror film Wolfen, a pack of wolves resists the destruction of the last of their habitat and hunting grounds in the ruins of the South Bronx: wild animals as opponents of gentrification. The 1970s economic bankruptcy of New York had led to the collapse of entire districts, and recovery from the crisis became the triumph of the free market over socially equitable policies. Today's struggles against the consequences of privatization begun at that time address rights for all those who produce and make use of the city. The four contemporary films in Whose Land question social power relationships that manifest not least in land ownership—ranging through a graphic adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, a history of the Bronx’s rehabilitation, urban gardens in Wuhan, China, and the Landless Workers’ Movement in Brazil.
